Hats, especially baseball caps, are a popular accessory for people of all ages, offering protection from the sun, rain, and wind while showcasing personal style or favorite teams. Over time, exposure to sweat, dirt, and oils from your hair can leave your hats looking worn and unclean. While washing them in a traditional washing machine can damage their shape or fabric, your dishwasher can safely clean hats when done correctly. At Dishwasher Installation, we provide expert guidance to help you keep your hats looking fresh without causing damage.
Dishwasher
Mild, non-bleach, and non-citrus detergent
Optional: a hat frame or cage to maintain shape
Optional: pre-treatment solution for heavily soiled areas
If your hat has sweat stains or heavy dirt, apply a mild liquid soap or laundry stain remover. Allow it to sit for 20–30 minutes to break down oils and grime, improving the washing results.
Place your hat in a dishwasher-safe hat frame or cage to preserve its shape. If a frame isn’t available, carefully secure the hat to the top rack using binder clips or the adjustable strap of the hat. Always place the hat on the top rack, away from direct heat.
Use a small amount of mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Avoid standard dishwasher detergents containing bleach or citrus, as they can fade colors, damage fabric, or create excess suds.
Set your dishwasher to a cold water or gentle cycle. Ensure the heat-dry option is turned off to prevent shrinking or warping.
After the cycle is complete, carefully remove the hat from the dishwasher. Place it in a well-ventilated area to dry naturally, maintaining its shape. For hats made of softer fabrics, you can position them over a bowl or other rounded object to help them retain their form. Avoid direct sunlight for delicate materials.
The dishwasher can safely clean more than dishes! Lightly soiled household items can be placed on the top rack for cleaning, such as:
Silk flowers
Hairbrushes and combs
Small kitchen tools like turntables and sponges
Children’s bath toys
Golf balls and mouthguards
With such versatility, it’s essential to keep your dishwasher in top condition. Regular cleaning and inspection of filters, spray arms, and detergent dispensers will ensure your appliance continues to operate efficiently for both dishes and other household cleaning tasks.
By following these steps, you can safely wash your hats in the dishwasher, keeping them clean, fresh, and undamaged. Proper care not only restores your hat’s appearance but also extends the life of your appliance and ensures every wash is effective.
